Description
On the night of June 5-6, 1944, more than 13,000 American paratroopers from the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions jumped over Normandy. The 101st Airborne Division, the “Screaming Eagles”, was tasked with securing the exits from Utah Beach inland and capturing German artillery positions at Saint-Martin-de-Varreville. The 82nd Division “All American” had to protect the western flank of the landing and liberate Sainte-Mère-Église. Despite significant dispersion of paratroopers due to difficult weather conditions and intense enemy fire, these elite soldiers accomplished their missions with exceptional courage. The legendary commander Dick Winters of the 101st and paratrooper John Steele of the 82nd became symbols of this bravery. Both divisions played a crucial role in the success of D-Day, fighting for several weeks in the Norman hedgerows to secure the Allied beachhead.
