Description
The P-51 Mustang revolutionized aerial warfare over Normandy in 1944. Thanks to its Rolls-Royce Merlin engine and exceptional range of 1,800 miles, it could escort Allied bombers all the way to Germany and back. Its maximum speed of 437 mph and remarkable maneuverability made it a formidable opponent for the Luftwaffe. American aces like Chuck Yeager with 12 aerial victories, or George Preddy who shot down 25 enemy aircraft, mainly flying a P-51 named “Cripes A’Mighty”, became legends. Don Gentile, nicknamed by the press as “the ace of aces”, achieved most of his 21 victories in his P-51 “Shanghai Joe”. These brave pilots not only protected Allied bombers but also actively participated in weakening German aviation, thus directly contributing to the success of D-Day.
