Description
The C-47 Skytrain was the backbone of airborne operations in Normandy and throughout the war. On the night of June 5-6, 1944, more than 800 C-47s dropped approximately 13,000 American paratroopers from the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions over Normandy. These robust aircraft, capable of carrying 28 fully equipped paratroopers or 2.7 tons of equipment, flew in tight formation despite intense anti-aircraft fire and adverse weather conditions. The crews showed exceptional courage in maintaining their course under enemy fire. After D-Day, the C-47s continued to play a vital role in Operation Market Garden, the Battle of the Bulge, and until the end of the war, transporting medical supplies, ammunition, and resupplying ground troops. The C-47 was so reliable that Eisenhower described it as one of the four tools that won the war.
